My girlfriend and I took this tour last week. Where to begin? I'll start by saying that this may have been the best walking tour that I've ever experienced, and... read more I've done a fair amount of them. Charleston is a beautiful and historic city, so there's that. Our guide, Jonathan, elevated the experience to such a great degree through his unique storytelling that it took the tour from a strong A to an A+++. The tour had a natural cadence to it as we walked, taking us on engaging accounts of the comprehensive, deep history of Charleston - we were engaged the ENTIRE time. Jonathan welcomed questions and maintained a highly personal connection with the group so that you didn't feel like you were listening to a scripted host just spitting out facts. We felt that we received more than our money's worth in terms of content, and yet the distance we covered was still a manageable walk for everyone. Jonathan’s passion for the city was obvious to all. If you are a photographer, definitely bring your camera because you are going to get some great shots. Book this tour if you visit Charleston.

In Spring 1670, some 200 English colonists arrived to establish Charles Town on the west bank of the Ashley River, a few miles from the present-day city centre. Over subsequent decades, the city grew wealthy through its exports of rice and sea island cotton. However, the ravages of the Civil War and then the 1886 earthquake devastated Charleston and its hinterland.
Throughout the 20th and into the 21st Century Charleston has developed a diverse economy and has become a successful tourist destinations.
In a two-hour walking tour, Jon led us through Charleston’s incredibly rich history . . . its communities and their cultures, inspirational leaders and teachers, mansions, theatres and galleries, plantations, businesses, armed conflicts, fires and natural disasters, and the resilience of its citizens.
The tour was lively throughout . . . lots of anecdotes, illustrations and q &a. Simply superb!
