Badass Broads: A Charleston Women’s History Walking Tour

Every badass history has a badass HERSTORY.

JWalk Tours presents Charleston’s most unique walking tour, “Badass Broads of Charleston.” This is a walk where we may step outside of the lines just a bit but we consider it a homage to these ladies who sometimes had to step way outside of the lines and defy the conventions of their day to make their marks.

JWalk Tours is proud to tell you about a few of the badass ladies who you’ll discover are a vibrant part of Charleston’s story. A story that is, unfortunately, relegated to back pages of history and often untold.

Who you’ll meet

You will get to know one of America’s first rebels, a Revolutionary War hero who threw herself into that monumental effort. We’ll get into some darker history and meet a villain of sorts who stepped far outside the lines as one of the most famous female pirates of all time. More than a few of our early feminists shaped our history by speaking out against social injustice and railing against the evils of slavery in an economy that was largely driven by it. Post-slavery era, you’ll meet the daughter of a former slave who Martin Luther King referred to as “The Grandmother of the Movement.”

Good to know

This is a two-hour walk through the historic district at an easy pace with frequent stops, over cobblestone and brick streets in places. The tour covers serious subject matter—slavery, violence and social injustice among it—handled directly rather than glossed over. Guests regularly tell us it is the best tour they have taken in Charleston, and it is a popular choice for groups.

Tours run rain or shine. Wear comfortable shoes and check the forecast. Tickets are booked online in advance.

  • A Rare Gem of a Family-Friendly Experience in Charleston

    We took the Junior Nighttime Passport Experience with one of our grandkids, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip to Charleston. Instead of just listening to history, the kids become part of the adventure by collecting passport stamps, solving clues, and exploring the city after dark. It kept our grandson completely engaged from start to finish—and honestly, the adults had just as much fun! The guide was energetic, knowledgeable, and fantastic with kids, weaving Charleston’s history into an interactive experience that never felt like a classroom lesson. We all learned something new while laughing and making memories together. If you’re traveling with children or grandchildren, I can’t recommend this tour enough. It’s creative, educational, and genuinely entertaining—a rare combination. Our grandson is already asking when we can come back and do it again. Five stars without hesitation!

    This was a great activity for the whole family. While it is a kid focused experience, the adults got so much out of the tour too! I highly recommend for Girl Scouts!

    Three of us took the Badass Broads of Charleston tour, a couple of us live near Charleston and have taken several different tours of the city over the years, this was by far the BEST Tour!     Our family absolutely loved Charleston's Junior JWalker Experience with JWalk Tours! It was the perfect blend of history, fun, and hands-on learning that kept the kids engaged from beginning to end. One of the highlights was that each child received their own Junior JWalker passport at the start of the tour. At every stop, after learning about Charleston's history through interactive stories and fun questions, parents got to place a sticker in their child's passport. It was such a simple but brilliant way to keep the kids excited and involved—they couldn't wait to earn their next sticker! Our guide made history come alive with activities and questions that encouraged the children to participate instead of just listening. By the end of the tour, our kids were proudly showing off their completed passports and talking about all the fascinating things they had learned.   • If you only take one walking tour, make sure this is it!

    We take tours via Viator and Trip Advisor throughout the world. We’ve had wonderful experiences but THIS walking tour was EXCEPTIONAL! Jonathan knows how to weave a story and include a great deal of information into one story at each point. You will not regret taking this tour and learning the history of various Bad Ass women of Charleston and the importance of these women in history! Our niece booked the tour for the family and it was perfect!
